HOBBIT HYPE: SHERLOCK SERIES 3 DATES (Smaug-lock Holmes and Dr Wats-on-his-pocketses?)

After much grumbling about the death of the BBC’s current Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) in series two and a great deal of hypothesising about his resurrection in the upcoming third series, we finally have a release date: The first episode of Sherlock series 3, titled ‘The Empty Hearse’, will be aired on New Year’s Day (that’s 1st January 2014) with episode two on January 5th and the final segment coming on January 12th.

This post is filed as ‘HOBBIT HYPE’ because Sherlock’s leading men are a major part of the next film; most are aware of Martin Freeman’s (aka Dr Watson aka Bilbo Baggins) central role in The Hobbit franchise, but Benedict Cumberbatch will also appear. His voice will anyway; Peter Jackson brought him on board for the second instalment and asked him to give his reptilian best as the titular Dragon Smaug the Stupendous / Magnificent/ Tremendous/Impenetrable.

With The Desolation of Smaug (released 13th December) and all three Sherlocks unleashed in the space of a month, the world will be awash with ‘Freemania’ and ‘Cumberbitchery’ as the two stalwart Brits dominate both the box office and the small screen. The pair’s rapport makes their double act a fan favourite, but they weren’t actually on set together for the upcoming Hobbit film. A little of that chemistry may be lost considering all Freeman had to work with was a sound recording and a shiny ball waving about on a green screen.

Once again, Sherlock Series 3 starts on BBC One on the 1st of January, 2014 and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug gets its cinematic release on the 13th of December.
